Registration is open for the second annual STEM Summit (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math): Emerging & Innovative Trends for Tomorrow’s Classroom on Thursday, February 9th, and Friday, February 10th, 2012.  For our K-12 educators, clock hours will be offered.

About the STEM Summit:  This two-day Summit will introduce you to K-20 best practices in education focusing on innovative teaching and learning in STEM.  As attendees, you will be examining curriculum for incorporation of best practices in STEM teaching and learning.

This free event includes lunch and snacks, materials, and fun giveaways (including five copies of the  lauded Learning and Teaching Early Math:  The Learning Trajectories Approach, a Cannon EOS RebelT3 digital camera – over $500 value, a Texas Instruments graphing calculator – over $100 value, and more…)

  • Your educational colleagues will be sharing their strategies for incorporating STEM in the classroom

The STEM Summit is proud to announce the keynote for the second Summit is Dr. Bradley Layton.  Dr. Layton is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Applied Computing and Electronics at The University of Montana College of Technology.  The presentation will concentrate on Energy Technology Education in Efficiency To Engender Energy Independence: Science & Math Lay the Foundation for the Next Generation of Energy Technology Leaders.

The curriculum development this year will be facilitated by Dr. Michele Royer. Expect an innovative practicum developed by Dr. Royer which will allow you to take a project and adapt it using STEM principles to your classroom.

In a fun hands-on environment of multi-disciplinary faculty teams, develop engaging student STEM projects in the context of aerospace, education, energy, and Information and Computing Technology industries using innovative collaborative teaching/learning processes. Through the guided activity you will:

  • Create multi-disciplinary student projects that can be applied to your classroom or to an online environment
  • Explore innovative processes for student collaboration across programs and institutions, and for industry engagement in student learning experiences
  • Share perspectives from different disciplines and different education levels through the lens of a collaborative project
  • Discuss barriers and possible solutions to implementing truly multidisciplinary student experiences to meet the needs of growth industries and emerging technologies

We need an Android Apps Developer to Teach a 1.5-Day Training for Faculty

The Center of Excellence for Information and Computing Technology is looking for an industry Android applications developer to teach a 1.5 day (Friday/Saturday) training to a group of approximately 25 to 30 IT community and technical college faculty in Washington State.  The training will take place at Bellevue College and the date is TBD as we need to identify and contract with the  industry professional in order to set the date.

Payment is negotiable.

We are hoping to have the training sometime between late February and early June 2012.

Eden discusses why a geology major decided to move to a computer science major, her educational experience at Evergreen College, and what she does each day in breaking programs developed by developers/programmers to make sure what is developed is “bug free”, and more.

  • Seven IT degrees/certificates submitted by six colleges will be reviewed by industry professionals on December 8th and 9th.   The next session will be spring 2012.

Welcome Brandon Williams to the CoE Industry Advisory Board

Brandon Williams Brandon has worked as a manager of Geek Squad at the Bellevue Best Buy for four years. His main duties include leading a team of 12 employees in technology support. He has a lead role in the technology outreach program at Best Buy and dedicates much of his time to volunteering. His volunteer work has includes helping out at organizations like the American Red Cross, Evergreen Hospital, and New Horizons. Brandon provides his technological expertise and passion for teaching in order to help those in need.

Brandon is a 2007 graduate of the University of Washington with degrees in political science and law. In his spare time, Brandon hikes, mountain bikes, skis and plays soccer.

Building Your Web 2.0 Website with WordPress

 

The first in this series is: Building Your Web 2.0 Website with WordPress (Completed: 28 in attendance)

Friday/Saturday, November 4/5, 2011, 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (Friday) & 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  (Saturday), Bellevue College, $100

Faculty Audience: All disciplines

Prerequisites: 1) Ability to create and organize files and folders using Windows is essential; and, 2) Web Savvy: comfort with browsing the web and using web-based resources.

Course Description:  Do you want to build a Website using Web 2.0 tools and technologies to better talk about the work you do and classes you teach?  This workshop will teach how to quickly build a website that utilizes blogging and uses web-based video (YouTube/Vimeo), RSS feeds and integrates with your communications in Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.  You’ll also learn the basics of tracking the usage of your website to measure how your website is being used.

You will learn how to do this using WordPress, the most popular open source content management system.  You will also learn how to tap into the WordPress community so you can do all of this with minimal knowledge of web development.

Objectives:

  • Learn and build a website with WordPress
  • Learn to use themes and plugins on your WordPress website to get your site to look and behave the way you need it to
  • Understand and apply the aesthetic elements of user interface (UI) that create an appealing website.
  • Understand and apply Web 2.0 tools to enhance a website
  • Understand and apply Google Analytics to track and monitor your website’s traffic and why people visit your website

Part-Time Administrative Assistant Needed for Center Employment

Part-Time Hourly Administrative Assistant Needed

 Pay: $15 per hour

Hours:  2.5 hours in the afternoon (exact hours TBD), Mondays through Thursday (more hours for actual events and special projects may be required)

Responsibilities:  Reserve rooms for events, work with BC catering and events services, communicate with internal and external professionals via phone/email, word processing, process paperwork, file, edit and create documents, general coordination of projects and events.

Required Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Independent, self-motivated individual who can function efficiently with limited supervision
  • Ability to complete projects, assignments within a given time-line
  • Reliable follow up with director on status of projects and assignments
  • Strong editing and proof-reading (command of grammar, spelling, spell-check, etc.)
  • General math-skills related to accounting
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office software (word, excel, outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to coordinate and handle multiple assignments
  • Effective email and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of general Bellevue College campus offices and functions
  • A minimum of two years of general office/administrative work experience
  • A minimum of one year of community or technical college coursework

About the Center of Excellence for Information and Computing Technology

The Center of Excellence (coeforict.org) is housed at Bellevue College and the director reports to Bellevue College’s Institute for Business and Information Technology.

The Center of Excellence for Information and Computing Technology’s (CoE for ICT) three primary commitments in serving the community and technical college system (CTC) in its entirety are:

  1. Provide high-quality, effective, free and/or reasonably priced innovative opportunities such as events, services, research, resources for ICT educators.
  2. Partner, recruit, solicit advice and input, as well as  sponsorships and in-kind donations, from industry to better align CTC students educational experience to current and future workforce needs, as well as utilizing the expertise from the industry advisory board to inform strategic Center objectives.
  3. Present transparent information related to state-funded work Center products and programs so stakeholders are confident of: 1) cost-efficiencies; 2) a return on the annual investment; 3) the evaluative data demonstrating success; and, 4) tangible system value.
